Real Book Volume 1 – Real Book Software (2)

Whether you are a jazz musician with decades of experience behind you or are just starting to delve into the world of jazz playing , you have no doubt heard of the original Jazz Real Book fake book series that has been around in paper form for decades.

Real Book Volume 1 – Real Book Software (3)

It All Started Here

The original Real Book came out of Boston at the Berklee College of music in the early to mid 70’s and contained many essential “must know” jazz standards as well as many other lesser known jazz gems by artists whose names who were a really who’s who in the jazz world.

Then other book editions came out for Bb, Eb and Bass Clef Instruments with pretty much the same lead sheets that were in the original Volume 1 5th Edition in C.

The series evolved into a Trilogy when Volumes 2 and 3 were published in the years that followed.

All of these became the essential “jazz bible” for any musician interested in learning or playing jazz.

Real Book Volume 1 – Real Book Software (4)

Then Come The “Copy Cats”

A slew of “Me Too” fake books have come out from a variety of publishers riding on the recognizability and fame of the original.

Many of them continued to use the “Real Book” name in some form or fashion in the title.

They even mimic the layout, printing, and look and feel of the original.

The very stylized handwritten calligraphy font that was unique to the original book is used on the lead sheets and covers.

Most music notation programs include a font that attempts to recreate the original handwritten style.

So, the point is…

The Real Book has always been a very powerfully influential, potent and important resource for ANY jazz musician at any level.

No signs of it slowing down either. Quite the opposite.

Real Book Volume 1 – Real Book Software (5)

What’s The Problem?

The problem is that the world has gone digital. Paper books are simply one dimensional and obsolete.

They just aren’t as efficient, flexible, accessible and filled with features and functions like you find in the digital world.

There you have the ability to match them up with other media like the original recordings or videos by original artists.

Not to mention other digital media like MIDI files or other software like Band In A Box song files.
